Itinerary Description:

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Start Point: Umbwe Gate (1,600m)

End Point: Umbwe Camp (2,850m)

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Habitat: Montane forest

The climb begins on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is one of the steepest routes, ascending quickly through dense rainforest with muddy, narrow trails.

Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Start Point: Umbwe Camp (2,850m)

End Point: Barranco Camp (3,900m)

Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Habitat: Moorland

The forest fades into moorland. The trail continues steeply along a ridge, then drops into the Barranco Valley, famous for its giant senecio plants and beautiful scenery.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Start Point: Barranco Camp (3,900m)

End Point: Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Habitat: Alpine desert

You climb the famous Barranco Wall (a non-technical scramble), then traverse ridges and valleys to reach Karanga Camp. A short but important acclimatization day.

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Start Point: Karanga Camp (4,035m)

End Point: Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Habitat: Alpine desert

A steady climb leads to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Rest early and prepare for a midnight start.

Day 5: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Mweka Camp

Start Point: Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

End Point: Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

Begin your summit push around midnight. After a challenging ascent to Stella Point, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating, descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Start Point: Mweka Camp (3,100m)

End Point: Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Hiking Time: 3–5 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

A final descent through lush forest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate.
